Ruthanne Tudball Workshop
February 29 and March 1, 2012
hosted by David Voorhees at his pottery studio in Zirconia, NC
Ruthanne will demonstrate throwing, altering, and decorating techniques that she uses for her functional stoneware pottery.    She will also cover designing pots and slip use intended to be enhanced by soda vapor firing. She will present a slide show and discussion of her work and development as an artist over many years.
Ruthanne Tudball is internationally recognized for her expressive functional stoneware soda-fired pottery and operates Temple Barn Pottery at her home in Norfolk, England, firing in a combination gas and wood kiln.  Her two years of research into soda glazing for her graduate degree from Goldsmiths led to writing “Soda Glazing”, published in 1995.  She exhibits and teaches worldwide, recently instructing at La Meridiana, in Italy.  She works using a momentum wheel allowing for a slow forming pace, with all altering and slip work done on freshly thrown clay.  Examples of her work are now on display at the gallery which will be available for purchase by workshop participants.

Cost for the Ruthanne Tudball 2-day workshop is $245 with deposit required, limited to 15 participants; includes gourmet vegetarian lunches and snacks.  Fee includes participation in the wood firing session to precede the workshop on Feb. 23-25.

Soda Wood Firing Session with David Voorhees
Feb. 23-25
Your pots fired in my kiln, to be opened during workshop!

Those interested may participate in a wood firing session using David’s kiln.  There will be an opportunity to slip and glaze one’s own bisque-fired pottery using David's assortment of glazes, and to help load and fire the kiln. David’s unique wood firing kiln features shuttle car/door, Bourry style firebox, and a pizza/bread oven.  A combination of several designs, it is one of only a few wood-fired car kilns in the world.  It fires to cone 10 in about 28 hours using 1 ½ cords of mixed wood from local sawmills and his property.  David will cover design and construction considerations and some of the problem solving that went into its building.  Having been fired successfully 10 times over the past two years, his kiln has performed beyond expectations and yielded many beautiful pottery and sculptural pieces for the two dozen or more artists who have fired with David.  Firing schedule will be:  Thursday the 23rd, glazing, wadding and kiln prep; Friday the 24th, loading and start slow wood fire continuing overnight; Saturday the 25th, main firing day ending with soda spraying followed by pizza dinner from the kiln oven.  Kiln unloading will take place Wednesday, February 29th at 4PM during the workshop followed by a potluck dinner with Ruthanne.
